New Orleans Hornets Set To Be Renamed Pelicans – What?
In an intriguing renaming exercise that has the online community in an uproar, New Orleans is moving to change their team moniker from the Hornets to the Pelicans. What on earth possessed the team management to make this change, you ask? Two possible reasons are speculated upon.
First up, current New Orleans NBA team owner Tom Benson owns the rights to the Pelicans name, and wanted to make a name change that is more representational of Louisiana. Well, what better icon than Louisiana’s state bird, the pelican? Having the naming rights saves some time on paperwork, a definite plus on Benson’s part.
Secondly, Bobcats owner and past NBA legend Michael Jordan has mentioned his desire to bring the Hornets name back to his hometown Charlotte (North Carolina) team. A smaller factor no doubt, but definitely one the North Carolina community would support.
Other names were debated upon, but it looks like the New Orleans Pelicans will be making their official appearance sometime next season. What do you think of the name change, does it sound like a crazy idea to you? Let us know what you think.

At first I just started laughing, but it’s starting to sound better each team I look at it. But shame about the change of colors and jerseys (maybe). I’ve always liked NOLA’s colors and jerseys.
And I’d love the Bobcats to be replaced by the Hornets.
It sounds like a bad joke doesn’t it?
Love the idea of the Hornets moving back to Charlotte, memories of Mugsy, Larry, Zo and Mase were some of the better memories of the NBA in the 90′s.

Haha the Cans sounds awful!
