Free Agency Update Part 3: Mavs Lose Kidd, Heat Gain Allen, Roy’s NBA Comeback

After a week of free agency madness and only days before contracts can be signed, most free agents have verbally comitted to their futures.
The stars of the off season have all but been locked up and as teams start to get more desperate more money will be offered to the lower tier free agents, thus creating more horribly bad contracts in the NBA.
Kidd’s A Knick

What was widely expected of the Dallas Mavericks to do after losing out on Deron Williams was to resign Jason Kidd.
It’s because the Mavericks didn’t respect their competition that Kidd now plays for the New York Knicks.
He has signed on for a 3 year deal regardless of whether Jeremy Lin is brought back. Jason will serve as an experienced starting point guard or will leading the second unit and help mentor Jeremy Lin.
Kidd finally tasted championship glory in 2011 when the Mavs won it all. That team has since been decimated as only 4 players remain from that title run.

Ray Allen Walks The Plank To Miami
Ray has broken the Celtics fans hearts by ‘switching sides’ to don the red, black and white uniform of the Miami Heat.
He took a 3 year deal that is reportedly worth less than the 2 year $12 Million contract that the Boston Celtics offered him.
When you compare the two rosters you would have thought that Ray would have a bigger role in Boston.
So he’s turned down more money, more playing time and the respect of the Boston Celtics to join the Heat on what is the stronger championship contender.

Orlando Agrees To Terms With Jameer Nelson

The details of the contract are unknown but what we do know is this has been another mistake by the Magic front office.
Jameer wouldn’t have been cheap as he is currently in his prime and it will prove to be a thorn in the side for the Magic.
Dwight Howard will leave the Magic – it’s just a matter of when, that’s when the rebuilding starts.
With Nelson on the books it makes it harder to rebuild and the only way it might help the Magic is if he’s traded on draft night for a high pick.
But as Nelson gets older the less interest he will get virtually guaranteeing he will be in Orlando for his full contract.

Aggressive Toronto Adds Kyle Lowry
After failing to lure Steve Nash back to his roots in Canada, Toronto has rebounded by signing promising young point guard Kyle Lowry.
Tensions grew thick in Houston and Lowry wanted to get as far away from the Rockets as possible.
Toronto seems fairly far and why not as they too have signed the New York Knicks shooting guard Landry Fields.
This makes Jose Calderon expendable and its not too late for him to end up in a deal this off season, perhaps to the Mavericks.

Brandon Roy Makes Comeback – TWolves Cash In
Made via his twitter account, Roy announced he was returning to the NBA.
Because of his injuries that forced him to retire Roy is a risk/reward player. What better team to pick him up for that than the Minnesota Timberwolves.
They got rid of a risk/reward player in Michael Beasley which has left an opportunity for Brandon to shine.
The Timberwolves, clearly looking to make the playoffs next season are sure that Roy can lead them there and come up big in the playoffs like he did against the Dallas Mavericks in 2011.
Here’s to hoping Brandon Roy has an injury free career and reaches his potential in Minnesota. He could be the steal of the off season.

Bass To Stay In Boston

After turning down a player option for the final year in his contract, he has stayed in Boston anyway.
The Celtics see him as a better back up than Glen Davis was and it reflects in the new contract.
Glen Davis could not get an extension with the Celtics but Bass could.
They see Bass as a better overall player that can help them win now rather than the uncertainty Davis provided.
It’s a good coup for the Celtics.

Clippers Gain Jamal Crawford, Retain Billups

Jamal Crawford of the Portland Trail Blazers has since been added by the Los Angeles Clippers.
I don’t know what it is with the Clippers and their love affairs on 2 guards but they seem to get rotated a lot.
All the journeymen shooting guards I swear have gone through the Clippers in the last 2 years. You could say they love them as much as David Kahn and his point guards.
Although I agree with L.A’s move to keep Chauncey Billups. With Mo Williams out it allows Billups to play a back up role that suits him perfectly behind Chris Paul.

There aren’t many players swirling around free agency anymore and their are some teams that may be forced into desperation. Who goes where guys?
